DFR-5 WOODLAND PROTECTION THROUGH LIVESTOCK EXCLUSION*

PURPOSE: To keep livestock out of streams and off highly erodible woodlands.

APPLICABILITY: To stream banks and woodland areas subject to grazing.

TO QUALIFYRiparian (relating to the banks of a stream) areas and woodlands with 10% slopes or greater automatically qualify. Other woodland areas have to show soil loss above Tolerable (T) limits as determined by the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation. The stream must show up as a blue line on a topographic map. The stream does not have to have water in it year around. The riparian fence must be inside an existing boundary fence, or the woodland area must have an existing boundary fence. Adjoining fields need to be used for grazing.

REQUIREMENTS: The completed practice must meet NRCS standards and specifications for fencing. The standards and specifications dictate what materials must be used and how they are to be used. NRCS approved materials and installation practices must be followed. A copy of the standards and specifications will be given to you. Any deviation from these must be approved in advance. After you complete the fence it will be inspected, and must meet specifications before a claim can be started.

COST-SHARE: Electric fence will be cost-shared on at ten (10) cents per foot. Barbwire fences will be cost-shared on at twenty-five (25) cents per foot. If necessary, seeds and seedlings will be cost-shared on to reduce immediate erosion problems.

MAINTENANCE LIFE: The fence system will need to be operated and maintained for ten (10) years so as to keep livestock out of the designated area.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
    - Read the fencing standards and specifications information sheets.
    - Fence must be built to NRCS standards and specifications. Deviations from these must be approved in advance.
    - NRCS fencing standards can be exceeded at your own expense (i.e.-eight (8) inch end post instead of five (5) inch; four strands of barbwire instead of three (3).
    - Never staple a wire directly to a tree.
    - No boundary or right-of-way fence will be eligible for cost-share.
